180° Week 6: God’s Commandments Are Meant to Soften Our Hearts to Him

Dear brothers and sisters, This weekend we conclude our series 180°. Jesus came to do the changes and turnarounds in our lives that we can’t do on our own, whenever we are going the wrong direction in life, and in the course of this series we’ve looked at ways that he does that: facing judgment, healing our hearts, taking courage, changing our wrong thinking, stewardship of our gifts. To finish our series, we’re going to look at the way we view God’s commandments: do we view them as mere rules to follow, or as a means to build and improve relationships? In Matthew 15:1-9, we see that the scribes and religious leaders are jealous of Jesus, and they follow him not because they want to liste

180° Week 5: From Selfish To Sacrificial

Dear brothers and sisters, All throughout this Easter series, we’ve been looking at the 180’s in our lives that Jesus can effect. This week we are looking at an important “180” transformation in our thinking and behavior: moving from selfishness to an attitude of self-giving. Take a look at Luke 16:1-13, the Parable of the Dishonest Steward. The parable is about a steward who is in charge of the money of his rich master, and is about to lose his job, but comes up with a plan where he helps other people. Jesus says in vv. 8-9: The master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently … I tell you, make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth, so that when it fails, you will b

180º Week 4: God Transforms Our Way of Thinking

Dear brothers and sisters, In this series we’ve been saying that sometimes in life we are going in the right direction, and we might need a little course direction but in general we’re going the right way. Sometimes, however, things are going the totally wrong direction. Jesus came to do the 180’s in life that we can’t do on our own: facing judgment before God; healing our hearts; and moving forward in the Spirit of God from fear to courage. This week we are talking about a reality that might be a little offensive: that we sometimes think wrongly. God desires to change our merely human ways of thinking. In Romans 12:1-3 we hear, I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to

180° Week 3: In Christ We Can Conquer Fear

We’ve said in this series that most of the time, life is going in the right direction, but every once in a while, we need a “180” which Jesus can do in our lives. In Jesus Christ, we can stand before God’s final judgment without fear. Last week we spoke of the transformative healing that Jesus can provide. Today, we are speaking about courage and moving from fear to bravery. All of us want to be brave or courageous, but if we’re honest we often act out of fear. Read Romans 8:12-17. In this passage, St. Paul is contrasting between life according to the flesh, and life according to the Spirit. The self-centered life of the flesh leads to death, but the Spirit leads to life. When we liv
