Dear brothers and sisters,
Since the summer months are slipping away rapidly, I would like to offer you an update on a few “happenings” at the parish during the past month or so. There’s been a lot going on behind the scenes:
Our Youth Ministry has been active with several fun activities: outings at Boulder Field, Camel Beach, and our upcoming end-of-the-summer outing to Promised Land State Park. In July, several of our youth also attended the Light the Fire Youth Rally, the ISLI youth leadership retreat, and the Steubenville NYC youth rally at St. John’s University in Queens. Our Youth Ministry leader Judy Thompson is currently leading several youth and adults in a Leadership Training, and the adult Core Team are busy making plans for the Fall. Please keep our Youth Ministry in your prayers as all are still grieving the loss of Carmen.
On Sunday August 5 I led a group of 20 of our parishioners to St. Augustine’s Church in Silver Lake, PA – my home parish – for a special Mass with Bishop Bambera, as part of the ongoing celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Diocese of Scranton. Before the Mass the Bishop was led around the property on a horse and buggy (just like the “old days”). Afterwards we attended the parish’s 194th annual Chicken Barbecue. Even though a few folks almost got lost in the country, everyone had a wonderful time – and some plan to go back for the barbecue next year!
Thank you very much for your generous support for Fr. Nduka from the Missionary Society of St. Paul in Nigeria. We raised $3486 for the work of his religious congregation. I am grateful that he was able to cover all the weekend Masses at St. John’s – on Saturday August 4 I was in Bangor, Maine for the funeral service of my brother’s father-in-law, William Congleton, who recently died unexpectedly.
Around the church building, we are wrapping up on some summer work. The back classrooms are currently being re-carpeted and repainted, and by the beginning of the school year, they will look brand new. Many thanks to Tri-State Flooring and to our hard-working parish staff for their efforts.
Speaking of the beginning of the school year, registration for St. John’s Preschool, Faith Formation (our religious education program), and our parish RCIA (for those teenagers and adults who are thinking about becoming Catholic, or Catholics who need their Sacraments) are ongoing. Please contact the Parish Office for details.
With many blessings,
